Below is the most up to date information we have on the progress of Smith and Travis Street Construction as provided to us by: Connie Roebuck Community Outreach Representative Downtown / Midtown Transit Streets Project 713.739.4896 croebuck@ridemetro.org
This update is to give you an update on Travis and Smith Streets' construction as of 4-8-05
Travis Update:
Tomorrow, on Friday, July 1, the contractor for Travis St. construction will move traffic to travel on the new west-lane pavement three more blocks south – which means either at Texas or just north of Texas, through Commerce, traffic will use the east lanes. West-side excavation will begin in those blocks either Friday or Monday. (It looks like Texas Sterling Construction will not be working on Travis the 4th of July holiday weekend, Sat.-Mon.)
Previously:
The contractor had to adjust his short-term schedule as some issues were resolved, but the overall timeline is still on target. Now that the construction activity has moved into the northern ends, you will see more parking restrictions not only on Travis but also on the cross streets. While Texas Sterling is waiting as long as possible before taking any parking away, please be ready to adjust for it. Some areas on the cross streets, particularly toward Milam and toward Main will have to share zones. The best option we can see is that some of that area is loading & unloading by day (usually 9-4) and valet by night (usually 6PM-3AM). Texas Ave. will be the exception
– but that means LOTS of sharing there. And a reminder about some METRO commuter buses returning to Smith from a detour on Milam: Monday, April 11, the following buses will return to their regular route onto Smith. If you know of anyone who uses one of these Park & Ride buses, please pass the word in case they have not seen the notices on their buses.
- 214 Northwest Station and 216 West Little York/Pinemont INBOUND - 261West Loop, 262 Westwood, and 265 West Bellfort OUTBOUND
There are still many different parts to the work to be done, especially behind the curb. As a pedestrian, please watch out for areas of unfinished work.
Smith Update:
For those of you who use that short piece of Brazos at the south end of downtown, METRO has asked that we coordinate our efforts to return that portion to one-way on April 16. The anticipated expansion of the project up to Commerce will not happen tomorrow (Wed., March 30) as expected. We’re still waiting for the approval of the permit, and will possibly get that documented approval Friday afternoon. We will see if that permit does indeed get issued, and if the contractor can still get the crew on Monday. - The sanitary work is presently moving from Prairie south; that work should continue between Texas and Prairie through the middle of next week. Then, the work continues south to Capitol.
- Tomorrow, the waterline work will begin in the Capitol to Texas block; that work is expected to take 7 days and then move to the Texas to Prairie block. - And just to give you some hope for the Walker intersection – it’s expected that concrete will be poured on the east side of Travis in the Walker intersection by the middle of April. That very dense underground in the Walker intersection has taken a lot of time and attention by several contractors. While it will not be completed on the west side for several more weeks, it should be a calmer site after mid-April.
Please be careful when traveling or walking in the area. We still have several months to go.
