On behalf of the Houston Police Department (HPD) Downtown Streets would like to share with you the details of the new ordinance that applies to the employers of traffic control personnel--uniformed police officers.

If you or someone you know employees traffic officers to direct traffic at a garage or parking lot entrance, exit or for any other reason then this ordinance will affect you.

You will find information on the internet at HPD's web pages linked from their home page at http://www.ci.houston.tx.us/departme/police/home.htm. The link is in the lower right part of the page. If you want to go directly to the page about the new ordinance go to this address - http://www.ci.houston.tx.us/departme/police/home.htm.

You will find there the ordinance, regulations and guidelines, a flow chart of the new process, a implementation schedule that includes you and a permit application. HPD wants the implementation of the new permit, the regulations and enforcement to occur orderly.

To achieve an orderly deployment they will accept permit applications and begin enforcement in different areas in the sequence stated at web site. Be sure to review the information on the page accessed from the link titled "Traffic Control Personnel Permitting Schedule". You will find the downtown area is first and the application period began 11/8/04. You will either be in one of the listed areas or in the last category titled "All Others".

If you have any questions about this issue you can contact HPD at trafficliason@hotmail.com. HPD asks that you distribute this information to your constituents, friends or anyone that needs to know. Also please consider adding a link at your web sites to the information page cited above and mention this in your newsletters.
